On 5th July 2020, Lucy Atieno committed suicide by throwing herself in front of a train at a station in Vienna, Austria. She had earlier called a friend and police, saying she was overwhelmed and no longer wanted to live.
Lucy was 35 years old and had lived in Austria for several years. She once ran a small business which later failed. With no regular income and pressure from home to send money, she became depressed and felt trapped.
People close to her said she had been silently battling depression. Life in a foreign land felt cold and lonely. She could not share her pain freely, and in the end, she saw death as her only way out.
On 29th July 2020, Lucy was cremated in Vienna. Her ashes were brought back to Kenya, and her family laid her to rest in Seme, Kisumu County. The community came together to say goodbye and reflect on her painful story.
Lucy’s suicide shocked many and opened deep conversations about mental health. It showed how emotional pressure and silence can destroy lives. Her family now urges others, especially those abroad, to speak out, seek help, and never suffer alone.
